For homeowners mid-project
Temporary Housing While You Renovate Your Home in New Jersey
Living through a gut renovation sounds tolerable until week three, when there is drywall dust in the cereal and no working sink. A furnished place a few minutes away, month to month, so it stretches when the project does, is usually cheaper for your sanity than toughing it out.
- Furnished homes and apartments, 30-day minimum stays
- Month-to-month extensions when the contractor runs long
- Utilities, WiFi and kitchenware included
- Family-sized homes, not just studios
When it is worth moving out
Some projects you can live through. A single bathroom, a basement finish, a window replacement, annoying, survivable. The ones that push families out are kitchen gut jobs, whole-floor renovations, refinishing every floor in the house at once, and anything involving asbestos or lead abatement, structural work, or a roof that comes off.
The practical test is simple: can you cook, wash and sleep in the house at the same time? If two of those three go offline for more than a couple of weeks, moving out for the duration usually costs less in real terms than eating takeout every night, boarding the dog, and losing sleep to a 7 a.m. compressor.
There is also a project-speed argument. Crews work faster and cleaner in an empty house. Contractors will tell you privately that an unoccupied job site can shave real time off a schedule because nobody is protecting a living space at the end of each day.
Why a furnished monthly rental beats the alternatives
A standard twelve-month lease is useless when your project is eleven weeks. Short-term vacation platforms will take a two-month booking, but you are pricing per night, the terms change with the calendar, and there is nobody accountable if the listing evaporates a week before you move.
A furnished monthly rental sits in the middle: real lease paperwork, monthly pricing, everything included, and a minimum stay of thirty days rather than a year. You move in with suitcases. The beds, sofa, dining table, cookware, dishes, towels, utilities and internet are already there.
- 30-day minimum with month-to-month renewals after that
- One monthly figure covering rent, utilities and WiFi
- Two- and three-bedroom homes for families, plus apartments for couples
- Parking, in-unit laundry and workspace available, tell us your must-haves
- Same-town or next-town-over placements so the commute and schools do not change
Plan for the schedule to slip
Ask any homeowner who has done this: the finish date moves. Custom cabinets arrive late, an inspection gets rescheduled, opening a wall reveals something unpleasant. The single biggest mistake we see is booking temporary housing for exactly the contractor's estimate and then scrambling in week ten.
Book with room to breathe instead. We set placements up so extending is a conversation rather than a crisis, you tell us two weeks out, we confirm the next month, and nothing changes. If you finish early, most placements let you go without a penalty after the initial thirty days. We will spell out the exact terms before you sign.
Where we place renovating families
Most of our renovation placements land in Bergen, Hudson, Essex and Morris counties, plus Jersey City and Hoboken for people who also commute into Manhattan. If you want to stay close enough to swing by the job site daily, and you should, it keeps projects honest, we will search a tight radius around your address rather than sending you across the state.
Storage is the other half of the puzzle. If your furniture is going into a pod or a unit, tell us early; it changes what you actually need in the temporary place, and it is often cheaper to store more and rent smaller.
