Storage: rent less than you think
The usual instinct is to rent a huge unit and shove everything in. A better approach: separate what you genuinely need for the next few months, clothes, school things, documents, a few kitchen items, kids' favorites, from everything else, and let the rest go into long-term storage untouched.
Because the interim place is already furnished, sofas, beds, tables and appliances all stay boxed. Portable containers dropped at the old house and picked up at the new one avoid double handling; a traditional facility is usually cheaper if the gap runs past three months. Either way, label boxes by room in the new house, not the old one, your movers will thank you and so will you in month four.
